Lunchtime Seminar: 'Being an ally: How can we support underrepresented groups in science?'

17 July 2024, 12.00 PM - 17 July 2024, 1.00 PM

Bristol Next Generation Visiting Researcher Dr Katherine Elvira, University of Victoria, Canada.

School of Geographical Sciences, in the Peel Lecture Theatre

Dr Katherine Elvira is a Bristol Next Generation Visiting Researcher and winner of the Gilead Award for Excellence in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. She is currently visiting Bristol from the University of Victoria, Canada.

It is often hard to know how to provide active support in our quest to create an equitable, inclusive and diverse academic environment. From the daily struggles that women and other minority groups can face in STEM, to top-down approaches to change structural inequalities, Dr Elvira will talk about the work she has done throughout her career to champion EDI in science, and how the values of EDI affect scientific output and research impact. She will draw on her experience working with underrepresented groups in science to provide example scenarios that can arise in academic environments. She will then discuss how allies from different populations in the academic environment (faculty, graduate students) can respond and provide support. Join us for this 30 minute talk, followed by a Q&A discussion session. Feel free to bring your lunch!

This seminar is open to anyone across the University who may be interested.
