Measuring the masses – understanding human metabolism in health, ageing and disease
Abstract
Metabolites have many important roles to play in human health, ageing and disease development/progression; these roles include metabolism, regulation/signalling and in cellular membrane structures. The study of metabolites on a global scale (metabolomics) is a growing scientific discipline being applied in biomedical research to understand these important metabolite roles and define phenotypic changes related to genetic and environmental influences. In this talk I will (1) introduce the role of metabolomics in biomedical research; (2) define why and how mass spectrometry is applied in metabolomics and (3) provide examples of how my research group and Phenome Centre Birmingham has applied metabolomics in endocrinology, musculoskeletal health and exercise interventions.
Biography
Dr Warwick (Rick) Dunn’s research group focuses on developing innovative chromatography, mass spectrometry, sample collection and computational resources and their application in the study of the complex role of metabolites in human ageing and diseases (defined as metabolomics). Areas of biomedical study include endocrinology, inflammation and immunology including musculoskeletal health, cardio-renal diseases and complications of reproduction and pregnancy. Three key papers are defined below.
