Tooth enamel: A retrospective archive of early development
Abstract
As tooth enamel does not remodel, it retains a durable retrospective record of an individual’s environmental and physiological circumstances during the period of enamel formation. The enamel of the deciduous teeth develops during gestation and infancy. This research, based on histological and trace element analysis of teeth donated by children enrolled with ALSPAC, explores whether maternal diet and health during pregnancy, the circumstances of birth, and infant diet and health are reflected in the chemical composition and structure of enamel of the deciduous canines.
