‘Selection bias and bias-adjusted inference in Biostatistics’
Abstract:
Advancements in medical practice must be evidence based. This necessitates the collection, analysis and interpretation of data. In today's competitive world, scientists are under pressure to collect this evidence as efficiently as possible, by making use of existing data sources, novel trial designs and the latest technology where available. However, failure to understand the process by which data are created can lead to a biased picture of the information they provide, and give rise to poor medical decision making. In this talk I will give some examples of selection bias arising in biomedical data, and discuss how it can be adjusted for.
Biography:
Jack Bowden is a senior statistician at the MRC Biostatistics Unit in Cambridge, and has worked for the MRC continuously since finishing his PhD at the University of Leicester in 2007. He is currently the holder of an MRC methodology research fellowship titled `Bias adjusted inference in Biostatistics: at the intersections of causal inference, clinical trials and evidence synthesis’.
