Notifying line manager & payroll

On receipt of a jury summons form from the court, you should inform your line manager as soon as possible.

Jury service agreed

Where attending jury service has been agreed, you will need to contact Payroll with the certificate of loss of earnings form.

Payroll will complete and return this form to you which you will need to provide to the court on your first day of jury service.

Jury service deferred

Line managers should grant time off where possible, however in cases where the time off would have a serious effect on the business, the manager may ask you to delay the jury service. Jury service can only be deferred once. Under such circumstances, your line manager will need to be put in writing for you to provide as evidence to the court.

Changes to the arrangement

You should attend jury service when required. There may be some days where you will be due to attend court, but this is subsequently not required. Where this is the case, you should attend work as normal.

Where you are dismissed from jury service part way through the day, you are expected to return to work for the remainder of the day. Where travel arrangements make this difficult, please discuss options with your line manager.

Ensuring correct pay

After the Jury service is complete, you can apply for reimbursement for travel and food expenses, as well as loss of earnings from the court for the days you were in attendance.

It usually takes up to 10 days for the courts to process this reimbursement. Once complete, you will also receive a reimbursement receipt.

You should provide Payroll with this reimbursement receipt in order for them to apply the appropriate deductions to your pay. It is important that you provide this to Payroll, as the final number of days may vary from the original estimates provided in the certificate of loss of earnings form issued prior to the jury service.

Further support

If you feel at any point during the jury service process that you are struggling and could use some further support, we encourage you to speak to your line manager if you feel comfortable doing so. Where you feel you may benefit from emotional support, we have options for accessing counselling through the staff counselling service and other useful resources to support your wellbeing.
