Classics and Ancient History study guide 2024/25

What you can study

Bristol is an exciting place to study the ancient world, and not just because it is close to ancient sites like Bath and Caerleon! We combine an emphasis on traditional language skills, literature and historical understanding with an in-depth exploration of the continuing influence of Greek and Roman writing. Our aim is to help you think in new ways about the ancient world, and as a result, our own as well.

You will find units on:

  • gender and sexuality
  • law and crime
  • health and wellbeing
  • literature and art
  • ancient philosophy
  • Latin and Greek language

Pre-requisites

At UK universities, students specialise from their first year and rarely take units outside their degree subject. This means that:

  • Year 1 units are suitable for all students.
  • Year 2 units require some university study in the discipline.
  • Year 3 units require a strong background in the discipline.
