GIC Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor Ransford Gyampo will be holding a research seminar for PGRs and PGTs on Winner-Takes-All Politics and Africa's Drive Towards Peace, Democratic Maturity and National Development.

Date: 28th November 2018

Time: 2-4pm

Venue: G.02 34 Tyndalls Park Rd

Since the third-wave of democratization, many political parties have been formed in Africa and the contestation for political power has been done largely through relatively peaceful elections. This has led to the alternation of political power between different political regimes in Africa. Even though power alternation is good for Africa’s democracy, the exclusive rights derived from those who have won elections tends to create a polarizing phenomenon called Winner-Takes-All Politics which undermines peace, progress and democratic maturity. What exactly is Winner-Takes-All Politics? What are its manifestations? What are its effects on the quest for peace, national development and democratic maturity in Africa? These issues will be addressed in this seminar.
