Bristol Research Initiative for the Dynamic Global Environment (BRIDGE) seminar series: Tree rings and climate activism

23 February 2022, 1.00 PM - 23 February 2022, 2.00 PM

Professor Mary Gagen

via Zoom

Abstract and bio

I am a Professor in Physical Geography at Swansea University, and am currently on secondment to WWF UK as their Chief Advisor on Forests. In this geography-public engagement mash up I will cover some background work on high resolution paleoclimate records from the annual rings of trees, and then delve into how my research as a climate scientist became a tool for delivering inclusivity-facing public engagement and outreach. In the contentious world of climate communication, and in the face of the political battles we face around disengagement and stalled progress on protecting our climate and environment, I will explore how trees and forests can form a cross-political tool for public, and schools, engagement on environmental issues.

This will involve the work of two key Swansea University outreach and public engagement projects : S4 (www.s4science.co.uk) and Oriel Science (www.orielscience.co.uk) and the work of the Swansea Tree Forum (https://www.swanseatreeforum.org/)
