Academic staff and research students can use our gardens and grounds for your research projects and activity with nature and the outdoors.

Research resources

Our gardens offer a wide variety of environments and habitats that you can use for research. These include:

  • woodland
  • grassland
  • farmland
  • water, including ponds, canals and swale
  • hedges and hedgerows
  • trees
  • plants and different plant species
  • different climatic zones
  • green roofs
  • soil.

These environments host a range of wildlife, birds, small mammals and insects.

Fenswood Farm

Located in Long Ashton, Fenswood is a working arable farm which you can also use for your research.

It has just under 100 hectares of expansive agricultural land and associated facilities including:

  • mixed woodland
  • glass houses
  • laboratory space
  • controlled environmental units
  • grass ley for livestock grazing. 

Research topics

Our gardens have been used for several research projects, including:

  • pollinator monitoring
  • bird ringing
  • small mammal tracking
  • bat monitoring
  • people counting
  • water and soil sampling.

These projects are from a range of subject disciplines including archaeology, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, geography and geology.
