Centre for Sociodigital Futures (CenSoF) launched

29 June 2022

The ESRC Centre for Sociodigital Futures (CenSoF) is now open, following a 'soft launch' event on 18 and 19 May.

Hosted in Berkeley Square, the event brought together 40 colleagues from the ESRC, five collaborating UK universities and the centre's six strategic partners. It was an enormous success involving discussions, community building, presentations, filming and even Lego!

Collaboration across disciplines and sectors is essential to the work of the centre. This event offered an important opportunity for those involved to engage with each other, deepen their understanding of others' expertise and priorities, and start to build a shared vision for the centre. It also helped to lay the foundations for effective ways of working going forward, to enable the delivery of shared aims.

By exploring the interconnectedness of social practices and digital technologies, this ESRC-funded centre aims to identify – and influence – sociodigital futures. It will focus on what this means for the major challenges of our time, including widening inequalities and climate change.

CenSoF Directors, Professors Susan Halford and Dale Southerton, said: "We are excited to be up and running! We have an ambitious agenda and an outstanding team, reaching across government, business and local communities. In the first year, we will work together to explore what sociodigital futures are claimed, by whom and how, and what possibilities this opens up, and closes down, for actual futures in the making".

CenSoF's new office space in Berkeley Square is now open. This will act as a central 'hub' for colleagues to come together from across the centre and collaborate with others, including the Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI) which is based on the new Temple Quarter campus.
