Experimental Film
A range of brand new units were introduced across the Department of Film and Television in 2019-20. One of these is Experimental Film, which is a second-year undergraduate, practice-based unit that introduces histories of experimental film.
Students are introduced to the work of such filmmakers such Chantal Akerman, John Akomfrah, Stan Brakhage, Mary-Ellen Bute, Zeinabu Irene Davis, Maya Deren, Stan Douglas, Germaine Dulac, Isaac Julien, Yvonne Rainer, Hans Richter, Lis Rhodes, Michael Snow, Hito Steyerl, Margaret Tait, and many others.
They are then taken through a devising process in response to a creative brief, which asks them to make work on one of the following themes: Still Life, Landscape, City, Portrait. Students are asked specifically to focus on the ways in which the materiality of their filmmaking apparatus (camera, phone, etc) shapes the films they make.
You can watch their films on our Vimeo Showcase
