Driving Simulation Research

Would you trust an AV merging into your lane?

At the Trustworthy Systems Laboratory we are working in collaboration
with Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. to investigate how automated vehicles can
be trusted when they operate in shared road environments. For
wide-spread acceptance of automated vehicles by the public, trust will
be required. Are automated vehicles expected to drive just like a
human driver would, especially in complicated scenarios that require
cooperation and negotiation? Our research aims to reveal what it takes
for the automated vehicle to gain trust from other road users'
perspective. We have just installed a simulation environment using the
CARLA simulator to conduct our first study that is focused on a busy
lane-merging scenario.
