The DAYDREAMS project aims to progress the integration and use of data and artificial/human trustworthy intelligence for prescriptive intelligent assets management systems (IAMS) in railway infrastructure. This project contributes to the ‘European Shift2Rail (S2R) Joint Undertaking’ long term plan of increasing the railway’s share in transportation over the next 30 years, while meeting the highest service standards.

Through the integration of prescriptive IAMs, DAYDREAMS aims to optimize maintenance and increase capacity and reliability of railway infrastructure, while reducing emissions and vibrations. These are key components to meeting the S2R long-term objectives.

This €1,7M project is the first initiative to seek focused research and innovation and market driven solutions by accelerating the integration of new and advanced technologies into innovative rail product solutions.

The project addresses the following objectives:

  • Advance the maintenance approach toward prescriptive asset management,
  • Improve the decision-making process,
  • Reinforce the role of person-in-the-loop by developing Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs),
  • Validate the solution at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and
  • Further validate methodologies integrated into a TRL 5 prototype.

The Smart Internet Lab will lead on ‘Artificial Intelligence Modeling’, provide technical coordination and identify suitable mathematical tools for this project. For example, Smart Internet Lab researchers will correlate high frequency sampling sensors and cameras to optimize operation of the system with proper confidence intervals.

The Smart Internet Lab provides its expertise in 4G and 5G open networks alongside access to its own testbed.
