Palaeo Discussion Group: What criminology can tell us about ethics in palaeontology

1 October 2021, 1.00 PM - 1 October 2021, 2.00 PM

Professor Donna Yates, Maastricht University

In this talk I will discuss how concepts from criminology can frame our thinking about crimes related to palaeontological material. In particular I will focus on how unethical or illegal behaviour is “justified” on multiple levels: at a personal level via “neutralisation techniques”; an interpersonal level via “creative compliance”; and at an organisational or disciplinary level via the “normalisation of deviance”. The goal of this talk to spark discussion about the role that professional palaeontology plays in directly or indirectly supporting an environment where unethical or illegal behaviour can occur.
