2020 applications now open for prestigious EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship

3 February 2020

Recently graduated or final-stage outstanding PhD researchers who have been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for their research degree are invited to apply for the 2020 round of the prestigious EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowships.

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship scheme is a unique and exciting opportunity for recent EPSRC-funded PhD graduates (or those who will have submitted their thesis by the application deadline) to launch their research career in a supportive environment at the University of Bristol.

This two-year fully funded fellowship supports recent PhD graduates’ transition into early career research, and sees new fellows following in the footsteps of 17 Doctoral Prize Fellows at Bristol, working in the fields of Engineering, Life Sciences and Science. Doctoral Prize Fellows propose their own bespoke programme to conduct innovative, ground-breaking research at the frontiers of these broad disciplines.

Dr Edmund Hunt, a previous recipient of the Doctoral Prize Fellowship says of the opportunity: “After the big effort to write up a good PhD, receiving the Doctoral Prize Fellowship really felt like a reward. Two years of independent research time under a new academic research mentor has allowed me to focus on what I find most interesting and unleash my creativity. I have had several opportunities to build up my academic CV, including supervising MSc students and a place on the GW4 Crucible leadership programme for early career researchers. I have also had time to write fellowship applications for the next step after the Doctoral Prize. If you want to gain insight into what academic life is like and set the stage for a successful research career, I cannot think of a better opportunity or a better university than Bristol.”

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship enriches the University’s research community by bringing in some of the most exciting newly established researchers working at the cutting edge of research within the broad spectrum of EPSRC research themes. Bristol’s innovative and interdisciplinary research culture provides a stimulating environment for these fellows to grow into leaders in their fields, supporting their transition into early career researchers and helping them establish their future career paths.

Further benefits of the Doctoral Prize Fellowship include:

  • The opportunity to work within world-class research groups at the University of Bristol
  • An accelerated career towards independent research
  • Leadership roles and opportunities within the wider research community at Bristol
  • The chance to create a platform for a permanent academic post or further prestigious externally funded fellowship.
