The Bristol Doctoral College joins the University's Research and Enterprise Division
13 July 2020
The Bristol Doctoral College moves from Education Services to join the University's Research and Enterprise Division.
The Bristol Doctoral College (BDC)'s move to the Research and Enterprise Division (RED) reflects several changes the University has made in its governance to give greater prominence to our postgraduate research (PGR) community, including the appointment of Professor Robert Bickers as Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (PGR) and creation of a new University Postgraduate Research Committee.
The BDC’s mission remains the same. We will:
- Enhance the environment for PGRs through, e.g., our Personal and Professional Development programme.
- Provide student training opportunities through international, industrial, and external partner engagements.
- Work with our network of thematic research training centres to share best practice.
- Engage across the University on key issues related to PGRs.
This change won’t impact our day-to-day activities and the work we do to develop and support Bristol's PGR community.
Professor Robert Bickers said:
"Led first by Professor Sally Heslop, and then by Dr Terry McMaster, the BDC has achieved a great deal in the seven years since it was established. It has become a key part of our PGR infrastructure, much valued by students, and a sign of our commitment to providing excellent PGR training and support. This move will strengthen its capacity to consolidate its achievements and to develop our responses to a fast-changing PGR environment."
Jon Hunt (Executive Director, RED) said:
"I am pleased to welcome the BDC to RED. This move offers a great opportunity to enable integration across the PGR and research strategies and a greater focus on supporting PGR students, academic supervisors and doctoral training entities. The BDC will also continue their excellent work in enhancing the research environment and training experience for postgraduates."
