  • I don't feel the institution values and responds to feedback from research degree students.
  • “Nothing has been done about the complaints and concerns of the last survey so, no I don't feel the institution values and responds to feedback from research degree students.”

What the university is doing

  • As part of Education Services, the Bristol Doctoral College worked on a project to create a central Sharepoint site which collates all PRES results in once place and makes them available to all staff and students.
  • The site makes it easy to view PRES results by School, Faculty or Department, and benchmark against the whole datset.
  • Considerations of PRES outcomes were embedded into the established Education Action Planning (EAP) process, and many Schools now have a dedicated plan for the PGR community.
  • Providing clear and usable data from PRES ensures that Faculties and Schools can address issues that have been raised by the student community.

The Bristol Dental School closes the loop on postgraduate research student feedback

In June 2020, Bristol Dental School responded to feedback from PRES 2019, as well as a COVID-19 questionnaire sent out to postgraduate researchers in May 2020, with a direct email outlining feedback and suggested actions that have been or are being taken. The communications provided clear guidance and accountability around various aspects of postgraduate research experience including: the impact of COVID-19 on research due to closure of laboratories and clinical work; interruptions to Annual Progress Reviews due to COVID-19; availability of resources for professional development, study skills and training; support with statistical software and provision of social events.
