What is Clearing?

What is Clearing?

Clearing allows students who have received their school leaving qualifications to apply to available undergraduate courses at universities across the UK.

You may have heard it referred to as ‘late admissions’, ‘supplementary enrolment’ or ‘open applications’.

Clearing runs from mid-July to September and provides the chance for you to find a university place if your results are different to what you expected, your circumstances have changed or you haven’t applied yet.

Clearing can help you find a course or university that’s the best fit for you, even if it’s not one that you've considered before.

Who can use Clearing?

You can only apply through Clearing after you have received your exam results.

You can use Clearing if you:

  • didn’t get the grades to meet your offer
  • didn’t receive any offers in this cycle
  • have an offer but have changed your mind about where to study
  • you have an offer but did better than you expected
  • you have an offer but decided to study a different subject
  • you have not yet applied through UCAS for this year.

The Clearing process is open to both home (UK) and international students. Visit our fee status page if you are unsure whether you are a home or international student.
