2013 Cohort

  • Dr Christopher Dias (PhD)
A University of York graduate, Chris PhD project was based on the development of anion transporters for the treatment of ion channel disorders, supervised by Prof. Anthony Davis, Dr. David Sheppard and Prof. Philip Gale (Southampton). After successfully completing his PhD, he became a Publishing Editor at RSC in the he Materials, Interfaces & Engineering team and is the Publishing Editor the Journal of Materials Chemistry A and Materials Horizons.
  • Dr Matthew Everett (PhD)
A Southampton graduate, Matthew completed his PhD project - under the supervision of Professors Wass and Pringle - on indirect approaches to the catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to methanol. This would convert a waste product, carbon dioxide, into a high volume commodity chemical, methanol.
  • Dr Rosalyn Falconer (PhD)
An Oxford graduate, Rosalyn's PhD project was based on investigating the direct activation of small molecules by main group compounds, supervised by Dr. Chris Russell and Prof. Doug Stephan. After completing her PhD, she joined The University of Edinburgh as a Postdoctoral Research Associate working in the Cowley Research Group on the synthesis of new aluminium compounds.
  • Dr Stephen Hill (PhD)
A Sheffield graduate, Stephen's PhD project, under the supervision of Drs. Carmen Galan, Monica Berry and David Fermin, was based upon using carbohydrate-bearing quantum dots to probe how sugar motifs interact within cells. After completing his PhD, he joined the University of Düsseldorf (Germany) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
  • Dr Charlie Jarrett-Wilkins (PhD)
An Oxford graduate, Charlie's PhD project investigated using block copolymers as synthons for making materials on the nanoscale, jointly supervised by Profs. Ian Manners and Charl Faul. After completing his PhD, he joined the University of Toronto as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Prof. Dwight Steferos.
  • Dr Nick Lees (PhD)
A Bath graduate, Nick's PhD project involved the natural product synthesis of novel antibiotics and derivatives under the supervision of Prof. Chris Willis and Dr Paul Race. After completing his PhD, he joined Yale University as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Herzon Laboratory.
  • Dr Thomas Nunns (PhD)
A Bristol graduate, Tom's PhD project was on the development of novel drug scaffolds using photochemistry under the supervision of Prof. Kevin Booker-Milburn and in collaboration with industry. After completing his PhD, joined the Bristol Chemistry Teaching Labs as a laboratory technician.
  • Dr Daniel O'Flynn (PhD)
A graduate from Loughborough, Dan's PhD project researched the development of flexible strategies to nonadrides with agrochemical applications under the supervision of Profs. Chris Willis, Kevin Booker-Milburn, Tom Simpson and Dr Craig Butts. After completing his PhD, he joined Signature Discovery as Scientist.
  • Dr Katy Pellow (PhD)
A Cardiff graduate, Katy's PhD project with Professors Wass and Alder, investigated the use of N-heterocyclic carbene complexes in the catalytic upgrading of ethanol to butanol and other “borrowed hydrogen” reactions. After completing her PhD, she joined Abel and Imray as a trainee Patent Attorney.
  • Dr Guto Rhys (PhD)
Graduated from Imperial College London, Guto's PhD project investigated the incorporation of metals into coiled-coil peptide assemblies to generate de novo enzymes is supervised by Profs. Woolfson, Brady and Dr Bower. After completing his PhD, he accepted a position as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Woolfson group at Bristol.
  • Dr James Smith (PhD)
A Bristol graduate, James' PhD project was based on the development of transition-metal free electrophile-mediated enantiospecific cross-couplings and is supervised by Prof. Varinder Aggarwal and Dr. Daniele Leonori. After completing his PhD, he accepted a position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Aggarwal group at Bristol.
  • Dr Robert Tromans (PhD)
A Bristol graduate, Rob's PhD projext was on the design and synthesis of synthetic lectins for binding oligo and polysaccharides under the supervision of Profs. Davis, Crump and Dr. Galan. After completing his PhD, he joined Ziylo as a Senior Scientist.
  • Dr Will Yu (PhD)
A Southampton graduate, Will's PhD project was based on the reactivity of novel tricyclic aziridines under the supervision of Profs. Booker-Milburn and Aggarwal. After completing his PhD, he joined the Medicines Discovery Institute (Cardiff University) as a Postdoctoral Research Associate.
