Programme details

You will be spending 4 weeks studying at the National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan. 

The programme will include:

  • Daily Mandarin lessons Monday - Friday
  • Sessions to learn about Taiwanese culture
  • Field trips to cultural sites
  • Free time at weekends to explore Taiwan

This programme will help you too:

  • gain basic Mandarin language skills
  • immerse yourself in Taiwanese culture
  • develop your intercultural skills

Eligibility

The University of Bristol has 30 places this programme. These places will be supported by Turing funding.

To apply for one of these places, you must be a current undergraduate student at the University of Bristol and not in your final year.

Language requirements

Any level of Mandarin (including complete beginner) can be considered for this course.

Academic requirements 

You do not need to meet any academic requirements to take part in this programme.

Costs

This programme is supported by funding from the Taiwan Ministry for Education. Thanks to this support, the programme fee has been significantly reduced for all students.

The total programme fee to NSYSU is £350. 

This includes:

  • 4 week summer school
  • all organised field trips and cultural trips
  • accommodation in shared rooms on campus

You will need to organise and pay for all other costs, including:

  • return international flights
  • meals and personal expenses
  • visa, if required
  • spending money

Funding

Turing funding 

There are 30 places on this programme that will be supported by Turing funding. The Turing Scheme is a UK government initiative. There are two rates available:

Turing rate A

Cost of living grant: £480 for 4 weeks.

Eligibility: All undergraduate students not in their final year.

Turing rate B 

Cost of living grant: £590 for 4 weeks.

Travel grant: £905. 

Eligibility: Home undergraduate students, not in their final year, who meet at least one of the following criteria: 

  • your household income is under £42,875
    • this includes recipients of the Access to Bristol / Bristol Scholars bursary, OR you receive Universal Credit; note that you must be the recipient, not a partner or family member.
  • you are care-experienced 
  • you have caring responsibilities
  • you are an estranged student 
  • you are a refugee or asylum seeker
  • you are a mature student
  • your ethnicity is listed under Asian or Asian British; Black, Black British, Caribbean or African; Mixed or multiple ethnic groups; or the Other ethnic group catergory on the gov.uk list of ethnic groups.
  • you have a disability or special educational need. Please note that the term disability is very wide; further details of what may be considered a disability are in this link definition of disability, and this will need to be registered with Disability Services.
