Italian Study Guide 2025/26
What you can study
Italy's language and culture have had a lasting impact on Europe. Today, its innovative contributions to design, technology and fashion make it a global commercial force. Our department provides opportunities to gain an understanding of the complexity of Italy as a nation through the study of Italian culture from the Middle Ages to the present day.
You will find units on:
- Cinema
- Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern Italy
- Dante
Pre-requisites
At UK universities, students specialise from their first year and rarely take units outside their degree subject. This means that:
- Year 1 units are normally suitable for all students, however some units require knowledge of Italian.
- Year 2 units require some university study in the discipline, and some require knowledge of Italian.
- Year 3 units require a strong background in the discipline.

Pre-requisites: units with a * require a degree of proficiency in Italian. Your background in the language will be checked before registration on the unit
