Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Study Guide 2025/26

What you can study

Bristol is renowned for the global approach it takes to the languages, histories, and cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds. This approach enables us to explore the incredible diversity of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries and how they shape the world today.

You will find units on:

  • film, media, and digital humanities
  • women, gender, and sexuality
  • literature and poetry
  • history and thought

Pre-requisites

Many HISP units have language requirements. For units taught in English translation, see the Cultural Studies guide.

At UK universities, students specialise from their first year and rarely take units outside their degree subject. This means that:

  • Year 1 units are normally suitable for all students.
  • Year 2 units require some university study in the discipline, and some require knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese.
  • Year 3 units require a strong background in the discipline, and some require knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Year 1

Pre-requisites: units with a * require a degree of proficiency in Spanish. Your background in the language will be checked before registration on the unit.
