From Financial Reporting to Stakeholder Accountability: Making unsustainable development visible

Financial reporting continues to prioritise the need for entities to provide decision-useful financial information to ‘existing and potential investors, lenders and other creditors’. This lecture, however, will discuss the need for organisations to provide a broader stakeholder accountability for their economic, social and environmental impacts. It will be argued that such accountability is required to make visible the extent to which current economic development is built upon social injustice and environmental degradation. Moreover, such accountability has the potential to inform public debate, to enhance sustainability literacy, and to empower stakeholders.
