Will Green Aircraft Fly? How microscopic 3D imaging could give the confidence to reduce weight

Goals for environmentally friendly aircraft set by the EC require 75% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050, largely through weight savings. Novel designs with composite materials could achieve this if conformance to design can be confirmed. Professor Robert Smith will propose novel 3D ultrasonic-imaging methods to map microscopic material properties.
