Nanomaterials – Environmental Remediants or Toxicants?

A one-day symposium organised by the Environmental Chemistry Group and Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The 2015 ECG Distinguished Guest Lecture will be provided by Professor Éva Valsami-Jones (University of Birmingham).

Dr David Spurgeon (Centre for Ecology and Hydrology) "Nanoecotoxicology - Standard tests a blessing or a curse?"

Dr David Spurgeon (CEH Wallingford) has a track record of research for the UK Research Councils, EFSA, EU and UK Government in assessing the key aspects of ecotoxicology for metals, pesticides and nanomaterials. Areas of expertise include fate and exposure assessment, bioassay development for uptake and toxicity assessment, ecotoxicogenomics, field based effects monitoring and risk assessment analysis. He has published > 90 ISI papers.

Dr Tom Scott (University of Bristol) "An evolution of deployment scenarios for the use of nano-iron in contaminated land and water remediation.”

Cabot Institute member Dr Thomas Scott is Director of the Southwest Nuclear Hub, the Bristol-Oxford Nuclear Research Centre and the Interface Analysis Centre at the University of Bristol. Current research is based on the development of novel nano-composite materials for industrial wastewater treatment, radionuclide processing and antibacterial coatings, using a combination of cutting-edge surface analysis techniques to investigate structure, corrosion and ageing behaviour of various iron-based nanoparticles.

Professor Debora Rodrigues (University of Houston) "Overcoming nanoecotoxicological effects for sustainable remediation applications of nanomaterials."

Debora F. Rodrigues is an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She received her PhD from Michigan State University in 2007 and was a PDA in the Yale University Environmental Engineering Program 2007-2010. Research interests involve investigation of the toxicological effects of carbon-based nanomaterials and polymer nanocomposites to wastewater microbial communities and applications for water treatment and corrosion prevention.

Distinguished Guest Lecture: Professor Éva Valsami-Jones (University of Birmingham) "Nanomaterials: small particles, big trouble?"

Éva Valsami Jones is a Professor of Environmental Nanoscience in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, where she acts as Director of Research and the NERC funded analytical facility FENAC. She holds a degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Athens and a PhD in Geochemistry from the University of Newcastle. Research interests involve (nano)particle reactivity and potential toxicity. She has pioneered methodologies for tracing engineered nanoparticles in the environment and led research in the development of the first synthetic stable-isotope labeled nanoparticles. She has ~ 120 peer reviewed publications and edited 3 books.
