Physical Geography seminar: What can paleo-data tell us about Ice Age Southern Hemisphere westerly winds?

13 March 2013, 4.00 PM - 13 March 2013, 4.00 PM

Seminar Room 1, School of Geographical Sciences

Speaker

Karen E Kohfeld,  IAS Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor at University of Bristol and Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Climate, Resources, and Global Change School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University.

Synopsis

The Southern Hemisphere westerly winds are important drivers of large-scale changes in the global ocean’s heat, nutrient, and carbon cycling. However, neither climate models nor paleo data agree on the magnitude, or even the sign, of the change in wind strength and latitudinal position during the last Ice Age.  This presentation combines large-scale data compilations with model simulations to address how Ice Age westerly winds may have changed.
