2024-25 Brigstow Institute Seedcorn Funding: Application Guidelines

Deadline: Thursday 7 November 2024 11.30am Nb. there are processes to complete before the closing date.

What is the funding for?

Brigstow Seedcorn funding is an opportunity for mixed teams of researchers to carry out curiosity-driven, playful, exploratory and equitable projects to take the first steps in developing and pursuing new research. We especially welcome applications from teams that might find it difficult to find early-stage funding because of the novelty of the ideas, methods or approaches.

The expected period of research/making is January to September 2025.

What funding is available?

Up to £9,000 per grant, although larger bids of up to £15,000 will be considered only if the additional cost is to cover the cost of employing a researcher through the University.

All funds need to be spent by 31st July 2025.

Welfare State International archive and community wellbeing

We welcome applications that explore any cultural, creative and community-related topic but are especially interested in receiving applications that explore wider notions of community wellbeing, and that reflect upon and use the content of the Welfare State International (WSI) archive that is held in the University of Bristol’s Theatre Collections.

Founded in 1968 by John Fox and Sue Gill, Roger Coleman and others, Welfare State International was a loose association of freelance artists bought together by shared values and philosophy. WSI first became well known for large-scale outdoor spectacular events. When the company began, taking art out of theatres and galleries into the street was considered revolutionary. Under the Welfare State umbrella, a remarkable group of engineers, musicians, sculptors, performers, poets and pyrotechnicians invented and developed site-specific theatre in landscape, lantern processions, spectacular fireshows, community carnivals and participatory festivals.

The archive of Welfare State International (1968-2006) contains material relating to the research, development and management of over 400 productions and projects undertaken by the organisation. This includes research notes, proposals, scripts, scores & technical papers, correspondence, marketing & publicity material, press cuttings, as well as extensive photographic material and audiovisual recordings. Alongside production files and papers relating to company management & administration, the archive also documents how WSI shared their practice through training, workshops and publications.

Importantly, a large portion of the archive documents the processes, through text and a variety of materials, that WSI used to engage local communities in an equitable way and that authentically reflected participants’ everyday lives and experiences.
