Free blood pressure checks to celebrate International Clinical Trials day on 20 May

Bristol Heart Institute Atrium

19 May 2015

On the 20 May between 10 am and 4 pm in the Atrium on Level 5, the Bristol Heart Institute will be holding a free 'check your blood pressure event' to help celebrate International Clinical Trials Day and the research the BHI themselves are doing into high blood pressure causes and treatments.

As part of the International Clinical Trials day the BHI CardioNomics Research Team (high blood pressure trials team) are holding their bi-annual 'check your blood pressure event'. Come and visit their stand to get a free blood pressure check and to find out more about the clinical trials they are running in heart failure, hypertension TAVI, imaging and interventional (stents) cardiology.

International Clinical Trials day is celebrated around the world each year on 20 May. It commemorates the first ever clinical trial carried out by James Lind, a surgeon in the British Royal Navy in 1747 comparing different agents (including vinegar, seawater and lime juice) for their effectiveness in treating scurvy.

Clinical trials have come a long way since then, and are the best way of proving whether a new treatment is effective. Today clinical trials can involve thousands of participants, and are subject to strict regulation to ensure patient safety.

The BHI will be celebrating ICT day this year with interactive stands throughout the Trust, where staff will be on-hand to explain how research is having an impact on patient care, and offer the opportunity to take part in some of our example "trials" on the day.
