The School of Biochemistry Professor earns the top spot in the Bristol Cool List 2020.

The Bristol Post has put together a list of the city's 41 coolest people, and this year it has been topped by the School of Biochemistry's Professor Christiane Berger-Schaffitzel.

The Berger-Schaffitzel lab recently had a breakthrough in their COVID-19 work. The team discovered a druggable pocket in the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein that could be used to stop the virus from infecting human cells. This is a potential 'game changer' in defeating the current pandemic, as small molecule anti-viral drugs developed to target the pocket they discovered could help eliminate COVID-19.

The Bristol Post article says "The life of every single person in Bristol changed fundamentally, or was impacted, by the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic...so suddenly, the people doing the expert work trying to find ways to beat a virus became very cool indeed".

Other people in this year's list include historian, Professor David Olusoga, and England rugby player, Ellis Genge.

Congratulations Christiane!
