Women into Medicine Careers Fair
2 June 2017
On 19th May 2017, The School of Biochemistry were delighted to take part in the ‘Women into Medicine’ Careers Fair organised by Redmaids’ High School. Over 200 schoolchildren, from both State and Independent Schools, from across the region took part in the event. Drs Alice Robson and Caroline McKinnon led a workshop on the Diagnosis of Sickle Cell Anaemia. A restriction enzyme digest and gel electrophoresis was performed on DNA from several members of a family to determine which of them have the mutated version of the sickle cell gene. Mrs Annabelle Gleeson, organiser of the event said “I just wanted to pass on our sincere thanks for introducing us to Caroline and Alice who were absolutely brilliant at the event….they were truly inspirational to the girls who all really enjoyed the workshop”.
"Thank you for providing a workshop that was both hands-on and with everyday relevance. It gave a real idea of what techniques are used in research." J Campbell, Redmaids’ High School
