Skirting Science 2017

4 July 2017

The School of Biochemistry was delighted to be invited to participate in Skirting Science 2017. Organised by the Soroptimists (Weston – Super – Mare), the event aims to inspire girls through a variety of STEMM subject workshops. Hosted by Churchill Academy in North Somerset, over 120 Year 10 schoolgirls took part in the day. In the Biochemistry workshop, pupils extracted their own DNA from cheek cells and made this into a unique piece of jewellery. We are looking forward to returning to the event next year for its 10th anniversary.

The students all enjoy the interactive nature of this workshop. They are excited by being able to "see" their own DNA and make their own DNA jewellery. This brings the science alive for them and stimulates their interest in experimental science. The girls finish the day feeling much more interested in science and more likely to consider studying science to a higher level at school – Ruth Thomas, Soroptimist International, Weston – Super – Mare.
