Can I use AI to generate feedback on students’ assessments?

You should not use AI tools to mark or provide feedback on student work without discussing your plans with SEDs/FEDs and our central AI team. If agreed, you will need to discuss, explain, and agree any use of generative AI for feedback with students, in line with our principles of transparency and dialogue. You should not upload student work to externally-hosted generative AI tools, unless this tool has been authorised for use by IT Services. You may wish to use generative AI transparently and in dialogue with students for formative feedback, but it should not replace your own or peer feedback. Please remind students not to upload personal or confidential information to any generative AI system.

The University supports teaching and learning innovation with AI under certain conditions, such as through BILT-funded projects exploring marking and feedback undertaken with AI tools. Should you be interested in exploring this in your practice, you must discuss your plans in advance with the AI in education team on ai-education@bristol.ac.uk, as well as with your school or faculty education director.

You can experiment with the ever-increasing AI functions present in a range of tools to use AI to generate a first draft of rubrics, questions, or assessment briefs, which you then review and edit, to see if that speeds up the production process or helps you ensure the output is easily understood by students. There is a small, dedicated resource to support innovation and staff development with programmes and Schools to build confidence in using AI tools.
