The Research Supervisor Symposia bring together Postgraduate Research Supervisors from across the University. Held annually, the Symposia feature presentations and discussions on a range of themes related to PGR supervision at Bristol, for example building communities and supporting international students. Keynote speakers from inside and beyond the University share expertise and insight, and colleagues are encouraged to share their own experiences and best practices in PGR supervision.

2024 PGR Supervisor Symposium: Celebrating and Developing PGR Supervision at Bristol

This year’s PGR Supervisor Symposium theme is ‘Building Student-Supervisory Relationships’ and will focus on key topics crucial to the doctoral journey: supporting your supervisory practice in the face of emerging challenges, enhancing the effectiveness and collaboration in co-supervision, facilitating students’ progression from the start to the successful completion of their PGR studies, and ultimately supporting students’  transition to post-PhD careers.

The symposium offers a safe and inclusive space for University of Bristol PGR supervisors to share best practices and pedagogies, and to explore their experiences of supervising PGR students. The symposium will feature a PGR student-led roundtable and short talks from supervisors across the University and will close with a drinks reception to celebrate PGR supervision and offer opportunities for networking and further discussion.

Interactive elements will be grouped around four key themes related to building student-supervisory relationships:

1. Developing your supervisory practice to take account of emerging challenges
2. Facilitating a student’s journey: starting, progressing, and completing their PGR course
3. Making co-supervision effective and collaborative for the benefit of our PGR students
4. Supporting a student’s transition to life beyond the PGR course
