Andrea Stanton

Andrea L Stanton is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Denver. She is an affiliate faculty member at the University’s Center for Middle East Studies and the Conflict Resolution Institute at the University of Denver. She obtained her MA and PhD in Middle Eastern history from Columbia University, and her BA in history and in religion from Williams College.

Her research focuses on media and religious identity among Muslims in the Arab world and the US, and on the history of broadcast media in the Middle East. Recent publications include a book chapter on Malaysian reality television show “Young Imam” and on debates about emoticon usage among conservative Muslims.

Her first book, This is Jerusalem Calling: State Radio in Mandate Palestine, was published by the University of Texas Press in 2013. She has received grants from the American Academy of Religion, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the US Institute of Peace.
