The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and will run from August 2011 to July 2014. Its aim is to produce the first large-scale, multidisciplinary history of the French language in Russia.

The research team will explore the impact that French had not only on the use of Russian, but also on Russians' thinking about their own language and, more broadly, on Russian social and political attitudes and on the formation of a sense of national identity. Their findings will have resonance in the fields of social, political, cultural, and intellectual history as well as sociolinguistics. The project will also contribute to a field of historical scholarship which is still in its infancy: by treating language as not merely a useful tool for historians but also a subject worthy of historians' attention in its own right, the team will demonstrate that language is itself an aspect of culture, a social institution, a key factor in the conceptions that peoples or groups have of themselves, a political instrument, and a potent force in national life.

Le projet de recherche est financé par l'Arts and Humanities Research Council (Royaume Uni) et se déroulera dans les années universitaires 2011-2014. Le projet a pour objectif de préparer la première histoire multidisciplinaire de la langue française en Russie.

L'équipe s'attachera à explorer l'influence du français non seulement sur l'usage du russe, mais aussi sur la réflexion des Russes sur leur propre langue et, plus largement, sur les idées sociales et politiques en Russie comme sur la formation de l'identité nationale russe. Les résultats du projet doivent enrichir différents domaines du savoir tels que l'histoire sociale, politique, culturelle et intellectuelle ainsi que la sociolinguistique. Le projet est aussi appelé à contribuer à un domaine de la recherche historique qui en est encore à ses débuts : considérant la langue non seulement comme un outil nécessaire aux historiens, mais comme un objet de la recherche qui mérite que les historiens s'y intéressent, l'équipe doit montrer que la langue est en soi un aspect important de la culture, une institution sociale, un facteur clé dans les idées que les peuples ou des groupes d'individus portent sur eux-mêmes, ainsi qu'un instrument politique et une force puissante dans la vie nationale.

В рамках проекта исследуется влияние французского не только на употребление русского языка, но также на размышления русских о своем языке и, в более широком смысле, на социальные и политические идеи в России и формирование русского национального самосознания. Результаты проекта могут быть использованы как в области социальной, политической, культурной истории, истории идей, так и в социолингвистике. Кроме того, проект должен способствовать развитию новой области исторического исследования: рассматривая язык не только как инструмент для историков, но и как объект исследования, достойный их внимания, исследовательский коллектив должен показать, что язык сам по себе есть явление культуры, социальный институт, а также ключевой фактор в размышлениях людей и обществ о себе, политический инструмент и мощная сила в жизни нации.
