Interface & Exchange - Early Modern Studies Conference

The early modern period witnessed the opening up of many sites of interface and exchange. The arrival and conquest of Europeans in the Americas, the religious plurality and schisms of the Reformation, and technology like the printing press created new opportunities for interaction and interchange, although whether these exchanges were constructive or combative was contested. Earlier spaces of debate, conflict, and trade, including universities, international diplomacy, and links between the Christian and Islamic worlds, also provided early modern people with opportunities to encounter new ideas, beliefs, and practices, and to interact and exchange with different cultures, systems, and perspectives. What forms did these interactions take, and how
were they experienced, conceptualised, and contested?

This conference will address these questions, and more.
