Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City (Roma città aperta) was first shown in Rome on September 27 1945. It is widely acknowledged as one of the most important films in the history of cinema, and won the Cannes Grand Prize in 1946. The story of resistance fighters and ordinary people in Rome, shot in difficult circumstances in war-damaged Rome and starring Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi, the film has since become part of Italy's popular memory. It also had a huge impact on cinema itself and the study of cinema. As Jean Luc Godard said "All roads lead to Rome, Open City." This screening will be of a new print and will be followed by a discussion of the legacy and meaning of the film with Italian cinema expert Catherine O'Rawe (University of Bristol), leading Resistance historian Phil Cooke (Strathclyde) and historian of contemporary Italy and memory John Foot (University of Bristol).

This event is part of InsideArts festival 2015.
