Rave on for the Avon - Film Screening and Discussion

23 October 2024, 2.30 PM - 23 October 2024, 4.30 PM

Peel Lecture Theatre, Geography

Please join us on the afternoon of Wednesday October 23rd, 2.30–4.30pm, for a screening and discussion of the feature-length documentary film ‘Rave on for the Avon’.

This timely new documentary spotlights community resistance to poor water quality in the River Avon, including the development of a citizen-led water testing programme by the Conham Bathing campaign group, who are applying for a key stretch of the river – in the east of Bristol – to be allocated Designated Bathing Water Status.

Following the film, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A. Panellists will include the film’s director, Charlotte Sawyer, and the Centre for Environmental Humanities’ own Dr Marianna Dudley.

Co-organised by the Political Ecologies Research Group and Centre for Environmental Humanities, the screening and panel discussion will take place in the Peel Lecture Theatre, School of Geographical Sciences.

Rave on for the Avon should be of interest to anyone concerned about the declining health of the UK’s rivers, which are increasingly afflicted by sewage discharges, chemical pollution and run-off from intensive farming activities. It raises critical questions about the politics of water governance in the UK, while highlighting pathways for communities to push for policy change to help better protect rivers and the diverse communities who rely on them.

We hope to see many of you on the afternoon of Wednesday 23rd!
