Nasim-e Tarab Ensemble
Maqâm Journeys – A Cross-Cultural Approach to Classical Iranian Music

The five-member Nasim-e Tarab Ensemble comprises of some of Iran’s most virtuoso musicians, regarded as the generation with the most demanding task of preserving/transmitting the classical music of Iran and, beyond that, enhancing its sustainability and creativity in, historically, one of the most challenging times of its development.

The programme in part includes Kordmafi’s compositions which borrow some rhythmic, formal, and modal entities from the neighbouring traditions in the maqam realm. It also encompasses a number of existing pieces from pre-modern and modern repertoires in the region that have been re-interpreted/arranged based on the aesthetics of contemporary classical Iranian music, in effect covering a wide historical span (from the 17th to the 21st century).

The composition and performance of this repertoire are part of an ongoing ERC research project called Maqam Beyond Nation, conceived and initiated at SOAS University of London and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

Free admission.
