Orality and early Greek epic: Jonathan Burgess

29 November 2023, 5.00 PM - 29 November 2023, 6.00 PM

Online (Zoom)

Prof. Jonathan Burgess (Toronto), ‘"Death (Apart) from the Sea": Teiresias' Prophecy and the Telegony

'Using as a test case the seeming intertext/contradiction between the Homeric Tiresias’ prediction of Odysseus' death "[apart] from" the sea and the Telegony's apparent narrative of Odysseus' death "[coming] from" the sea, I will discuss the issue from various methodological angles, including intertextuality, neoanalysis, oral "performance traditions," and textual composition.'
