Prof. Justin Arft (Tennessee), ‘Traditional Referentiality and the Bounds of Epic’

'I will address the ways in which oral poetics and traditional referentiality still serve as essential interpretive tools for understanding Homer's meaning vis-a-vis more textualist/literary readings, but I will also address some challenges we face with this oral poetic approach, especially when it comes to epic-scale or context-specific features of the Odyssey and Iliad that suggest some kind of internal coherence that goes beyond an unbounded traditional source.'
