State of German Nations

7 October 2021, 5.00 PM - 7 October 2021, 6.00 PM

Mark Allinson, Christophe Fricker, Anna Havinga from School of Modern Languages University of Bristol

Room G5, Arts Complex

Our annual panel discussion on key political developments in the German-speaking countries will focus on this year’s Bundestagswahl.

The panel will be comprised of three members of the Bristol German department: Mark Allinson, a political historian with a keen interest in constitutional questions; Christophe Fricker, whose interest is in the interplay between language and community; and Anna Havinga, an Austrian-born sociolinguist.

“State of the German nations” has been a fixture of the SML calendar since 2013, when the first panel met to debate that year’s federal elections. Two electoral cycles on, what has changed and what will a new German government mean for the environment, innovation, and Europe?

Three short presentations will be followed by an opportunity to share your views and ask questions of the panel.

The event will take place in the Arts Complex Room G5.
