History of Art Research Seminar: Professor Beth Williamson
Professor Beth Williamson
Arts Complex, Lecture Theatre 2
We're delighted that our speaker is Beth Williamson, Professor of Medieval Culture and Chair in the History of Art here at Bristol. The title of Beth's talk is:
Artistic Invention in Fourteenth-Century Siena: The Rise of Painting
Talk abstract:
Fourteenth-century Siena, long overshadowed in art-historical study by Florence, was in fact a crucible for great invention, and new approaches to painting and other artistic media. This paper examines some of these inventions, and previews a major, once-in-a-generation exhibition focussing on Siena (Siena: The Rise of Painting), opening at the Met in New York next month, and coming to the National Gallery in London in January 2025.
History of Art Research Seminars take place in Arts Complex Lecture Theatre 2 from 3-4pm, followed by a drinks reception. All welcome!
