Martinů: Symphony No. 3

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5

The University Symphony Orchestra performs two 20th century symphonic masterpieces, both composed in the shadow of war and repression.

Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony emerged triumphantly from the darkest days of Stalin’s purges, while the exiled Czech composer Martinů wrote his 3rd Symphony in the USA during early 1944. The work’s coda was composed as a joyous response to the news of the Allied landings in Normandy.

Tickets: balcony and stalls standard rate £15; balcony and stalls concession rate £10; £3 for UoB students (with presentation of student ID card).

Tickets are available to purchase in advance via the University Online Shop. The link to purchase tickets can be found here
