School of Humanities EDI Statement

Our Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The School of Humanities is an inclusive community of professional services staff, teachers, students and researchers; an engagement with other cultures, people and ideas is embedded in our academic practice, and we do this in the context of a socially diverse and culturally vibrant city. The academic disciplines within arts and humanities give us a distinctive opportunity to develop and support a diverse, inclusive and equitable culture based on our academic exploration of what it means to be human. We recognise the impact of personal circumstances and working arrangements on opportunities for achievement and will work to reduce barriers and empower colleagues and students.

We have a long-standing commitment to equity and inclusion, and we recognise the value that diversity of people, perspective and experience bring to our ability to innovate and to maintain our position as a leading research-intensive university. Curiosity, being open to the ideas of others, and remaining respectful in our interactions with each other are central to our institutional values. All staff and students have a responsibility to help foster an environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone feels welcomed and respected, regardless of their background, identity, or personal circumstances. We are working towards a culture where students and staff learn from one another and empower each other to confront and challenge prejudice, bullying, discrimination and harassment when it occurs.

Our policies and practices are designed to promote equality, remove barriers, and create a culture of mutual respect and understanding where everyone can fully participate and succeed. Our commitment is demonstrated through specific structures, responsibilities and actions, focused on the School and Faculty EDI priorities, and the University’s  EDI strategic aims.
