Partnership Event: Paediatric Cardiac Surgery with Professor Massimo Caputo

22 May 2023, 7.00 PM - 22 May 2023, 10.00 PM

St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace 78 Bishopsgate London EC2N 4AG

Please join the London Branch of University of Bristol Alumni in conversation with Professor Massimo Caputo (ChM 2000) whose pioneering stem cell research has been changing the face of paediatric cardiac surgery.

The talk will take place on Monday 22 May 2023, 7pm – 10pm (doors from 6:30pm) at St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace in London.

Professor Caputo will talk about some of the technically demanding operations he performs and will share the story of a family and child with whom he has developed a close bond with, who has a congenital heart condition.

Professor Massimo Caputo is a paediatric cardiac surgeon and Professor of Congenital Heart Surgery at the University of Bristol. He trained in medicine in Naples, but later swapped the gulf of Naples for the Avonmouth and came to Bristol where he received his Master of Surgery (ChM) in 2000. Today, he performs lifesaving operations on babies and children with complex heart conditions.

Professor Caputo and researchers at the University of Bristol, funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), have recently developed 'mesenchymal cell plasters' to revolutionise the way surgeons treat children living with congenital heart disease, so they don't need as many open-heart operations. ‘For years families have come to us asking why their child needs to have heart surgery time and time again,’ explains Professor Caputo. ‘Although each operation can be lifesaving, the experience can put an unbelievable amount of stress on the child and their parents. We believe that our mesenchymal cell patches will be the answer to solve these problems.’

This is an amazing opportunity to hear from one of the country’s leading paediatric surgeons.
