The Women Who Built Bristol with Jane Duffus

1 July 2021, 1.00 PM - 1 July 2021, 2.00 PM

Zoom

Join us for an amazing opportunity to hear from Jane Duffus (MA 2010), author of the spectacular The Women Who Built Bristol series.

A journalist, editor and public speaker, Jane Duffus published her book The Women Who Built Bristol: Volume One in 2018 after uncovering fascinating stories of women who were otherwise absent from history books. From a heartbroken barmaid from Easton, to an abducted heiress, Duffus explores an eclectic mix of women who have made Bristol brilliant. Stories also include fellow alumni Dorothy Hodgkin (Hon 1988), Nobel Prize winner and Winifred Shapland, Registrar at the University of Bristol for nearly 20 years (1931 to 1950) and the first female Registrar of any British university.

Hosted by Professor Karla Pollmann, Dean of Arts, this in-conversation includes fascinating insights into how Duffus sourced these stories, the women who made it into the books (and the women who didn’t!) and her writing process.
