Dementia and people with learning difficulties

As people grow older they can get different illnesses. One of these illnesses is called dementia. It can mean that people do things more slowly or that they forget words or how to do things.

Heather Wilkinson and Diana Kerr from the University of Edinburgh did a project to look at what happens when people with learning difficulties have dementia. This is what they found out:


bullet point People may get confused. But often no-one knows they are ill until they have been confused for a long time.
bullet point There should be better information and training for everyone about dementia
bullet point People who have dementia don't often get the right support.

It is best for people with dementia to stay in their own home if this is possible.
