Learning about crime and abuse

Sometimes, people with learning difficulties do not know they are victims of crime or abuse. One person said:

"At special school I was taught not to pinch other children's sweets and money. But I was not taught to tell the police or someone if people steal things from me."

It is important for people with learning difficulties to learn about crime and abuse, and what to do about it.

  • Find out what crime is.
  • Find out what abuse is.
  • Talk and think about how to report crime and abuse. What would you say? Who would you talk to?
  • Cut out crime stories from newpapers and magazines. Make a wall display or scrapbook.
  • Think about TV programmes you watch. Talk about some of the things you think are crimes.
