Independent spirit
Bristol is a city built on individuality and self-expression. Tastemakers, trendsetters and subverters of the status quo make this city their home.
Activism and community engagement
According to University of Bristol historian Dr James Watts, protest is 'woven into the city's history'. Bristol is an engaged and active city, home to strong grassroots movements – from the Bristol Bus Boycott of 1963, to the Black Lives Matter movement and the toppling of the Colston statue in 2020.
But activism isn't only about protest. Bristol's commitment to individuality and community takes many forms. Art installations, public music festivals and co-operative businesses all illustrate Bristol's independent spirit. We also have the longest street of independent shops in Europe.
An iconic skyline
The Clifton Suspension Bridge and the University's Wills Memorial Building are synonymous with Bristol. Whenever you return to the city, these landmarks will welcome you home.
Bristol is hilly, but it's worth it for the breathtaking views. Brandon Hill is a popular park near campus, offering views across Bristol and beyond.
Bristol's skyline is beautiful year-round, but especially during Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. More than 100 hot air balloons take to the skies every August, with more creativite editions every year. Recent fan favourite balloons include Sonic the Hedgehog and the Giant Babybel cheese.
